'Sell yourself' in retail sales jobs

July 01, 2009

It is a valuable skill to be able to sell yourself in retail sales jobs, as well as products and services.

While the bottom line in sales may be results, Garth Moulton has explained that office politics can play a big part in the fortunes of staff.

The sales expert wrote on his Garth's World website that people need to learn to promote their own skills to stay ahead of the competition.

"Spend at least a third of your time selling yourself within your own company. As unappealing as it sounds to certain types of people, this applies to all job functions and increases in importance the higher up the food chain you go," he said.

"Spend another third of your time selling yourself outside the company. I realise that this leaves at most a third of your time for actually selling the customer … that is more than enough time required for an efficient, disciplined salesperson to rock the number."

Mr Moulton recently declared himself a big fan of selling through the internet and the Sales 2.0 movement.ADNFCR-2182-ID-19245888-ADNFCR
